“ the best way to be sure you are offering a competitive salary is to be aware of what the competition is paying ”

How do I determine what the average salary is for a given job?

This may sound simplistic, but the best way to be sure you are offering a competitive salary is to be aware of what the competition is paying. There are three major ways to accomplish that:

  1. When interviewing people be sure to ask what there current salary is. Doing so will give an overview as to what the market will bear.

  2. Contact professional recruiters. These search professionals are in constant touch with the employment market. They know what people earn and they know the salary trends because they also know what companies (your competition) is offering.

  3. Go on line! There are many web sites that give the mean salaries of a wide variety of careers. A general search for "salary" will expose a large number of choices. Two good sites are "salary.com" (www.salary.com) and "abbott-langer.com"(www.abbott-langer.com).
